Internal glazing FAQ
Answers to the questions we're asked most — costs, regulations, lead times and how each product works.
General
What is internal glazing?
Internal glazing is any glass used inside a building rather than in its outside walls — steel-look screens, glazed doors, glass partitions, room dividers, internal windows and balustrades. It divides space while letting daylight travel from room to room.
How much does internal glazing cost?
As a guide, steel-look internal screens run from about £550 to £900 per m² plus VAT fitted, frameless glass partitions from about £230 to £520 per m², and glazed door sets from about £1,100. The online guide-price tool gives a range for your size, and the survey gives a fixed price.
Do I need Building Regulations approval for internal glass?
Most internal glazing doesn't need an application, but it must use safety glass in critical locations — near floors and in and around doors — under Approved Document K. Glass on an escape route may need to be fire-rated, and cutting into a load-bearing wall needs Building Control sign-off.
Aluminium or steel for an internal screen?
Most steel-look screens are slim aluminium: lighter, rust-free and less expensive. Solid steel gives the slimmest heritage sections and a heavier feel, at a higher price and a longer lead time.
How long does it take?
Most jobs take 3–6 weeks from survey to fitting, depending on the product. A single screen, door set or glass office is usually fitted in a day.
Do you cover my area?
We survey and install across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Enter your postcode on the form and we'll confirm a survey date.
Working with us
Do you only fit, or can I buy supply-only?
We supply and fit. Internal glass has to be measured, fixed and sealed precisely, and our prices and guarantee are based on our own team doing the installation.
Is there a guarantee?
Yes. Our workmanship guarantee is set out in writing with your quote, alongside the manufacturers' warranties on the frames, glass and hardware.
How do payments work?
Payment terms are set out on your written quote before you commit to anything, so you know exactly what's due and when.
Can you work in an occupied office?
Yes. We plan installs around your working day, with evening and weekend fitting where needed, and provide method statements and risk assessments for building managers.
Can internal glass be fitted in a rented property?
Yes, with the landlord's permission. We can provide drawings and specifications for them to approve before anything is ordered.
Do you remove old partitions?
Yes. We can strip out old partitioning as part of the job, and our partition repairs service covers damaged glass, doors and seals.
About the products
Is a steel-look screen actually steel?
Usually not. Most are slim aluminium powder-coated to look like steel, because aluminium is lighter, won't rust and costs less. Solid steel is available if you want a heavier heritage section.
Is frameless glass safe with children around?
Yes. Toughened glass is several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. We can add frosted markings at child and adult eye level so the glass is easy to see.
Can you fit a double door where I have a single?
Often, if the wall either side allows the opening to be widened. Widening a load-bearing wall needs structural input, and we tell you at survey if it does.
Do pivot doors need a special floor?
The bottom pivot is fixed into the floor, so we need a solid base — concrete or a well-supported timber floor. Underfloor heating pipes are located before we drill.
Do sliding doors seal like a hinged door?
Not quite — a surface-mounted slider leaves small gaps. Brush seals help, but if you need sound control a hinged or pocket door with seals is better.
Does an internal window need Building Regulations approval?
Usually not on its own, but forming an opening in a load-bearing wall needs a lintel and Building Control sign-off. Glass near the floor must be safety glass.
Does a glass balustrade need a handrail?
Stairs still need a handrail to grip, which can be fixed to the wall. Whether the glass needs a top rail depends on the glass type and fixing; laminated glass in a structural channel often doesn't.
Can partitions be fitted out of hours?
Yes. Evening and weekend fitting is common in occupied offices so the working day isn't disrupted.
What Rw rating do I need?
As a rough guide, Rw 38–42 dB suits general private offices and Rw 45 dB or more suits confidential rooms. The door and ceiling are usually the weak points, so we specify those too.
How much does a glass meeting room cost?
A four-person single-glazed room typically runs from around £6,000 to £12,000 plus VAT fitted, depending on its size, the door and the glass. Acoustic double glazing adds to that.
Can frameless glass doors be locked?
Yes. Locks fit into the bottom patch fitting or a lock box, and doors can be prepared for access control.
Does smart glass block light when it's frosted?
No — it scatters the light, so the room stays bright while the view is blocked, much like satin glass.
Is manifestation a legal requirement?
In workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, large areas of glass that people could walk into need manifestation under Building Regulations and workplace safety rules.
What's the difference between E and EI glass?
E-rated glass holds back flames and smoke. EI-rated glass also insulates, limiting the heat on the safe side — needed where people must pass close to the glass on an escape route.
Can you replace one panel in a partition?
Yes. We measure the opening, match the glass type and thickness, and fit a single replacement panel.
