Internal Glazing

Glass pivot doors

A glass pivot door rotates on a pin set into the floor and head, rather than hanging on side hinges. That lets the door be taller, wider and heavier than a normal internal door, and it swings with a slow, balanced action.

What are glass pivot doors?

Internal pivot doors come framed in slim black steel-look profiles or fully frameless. The pivot can be set off-centre, so the door opens as a wide single leaf, or central, so it turns to give an opening on each side.

Options and specification

  • Heights to around 3 metres in suitable openings
  • Off-centre or central pivot with hydraulic speed control
  • Framed steel-look or frameless toughened glass
  • Can be matched to a fixed screen either side

Where they work best

We most often fit glass pivot doors in entrance halls, kitchen-to-living openings, home offices, showrooms and hotel interiors. At the survey we'll look at the light, the way the space is used and the structure around the opening, and suggest a layout that works for it.

Building Regulations and safety

Door glass is a critical location, so toughened or laminated safety glass is used. The floor pivot needs a solid, level base, which we check at survey.

How the job runs

We survey and measure, send a drawing and a fixed written price, then make your glazing to order — lead time is typically 5–7 weeks from survey. On the day, floors are protected, the frame or track is fixed, the glass is set and sealed, and the space is cleaned before handover.

Questions about glass pivot doors

Do pivot doors need a special floor?

The bottom pivot is fixed into the floor, so we need a solid base — concrete or a well-supported timber floor. Underfloor heating pipes are located before we drill.

Do pivot doors close on their own?

Most internal pivots use a hydraulic mechanism that controls the speed and can hold the door open at set angles; self-closing is optional.

How wide can a pivot door be?

Internal pivots commonly run from about 900mm to 1500mm wide, depending on the height and the weight of the glass.
