Smart switchable glass

Smart switchable glass contains a liquid-crystal film between two panes of laminated glass. With the power on the film lines up and the glass is clear; switch it off and the glass turns an opaque milky white for instant privacy.

What are smart switchable glass?

It can be used in partitions, meeting rooms, internal windows and bathroom screens. It's controlled by a wall switch, remote, timer or smart-home system, and runs on a low-voltage supply through a transformer.

Where they work best

We most often fit smart switchable glass in boardrooms, consulting rooms, bathrooms, home offices and hotel suites. At the survey we'll look at the light, the way the space is used and the structure around the opening, and suggest a layout that works for it.

Building Regulations and safety

Switchable glass is laminated safety glass. The low-voltage supply is wired by a qualified electrician, which we arrange.

How the job runs

We survey and measure, send a drawing and a fixed written price, then make your glazing to order — lead time is around 5–7 weeks from survey. On the day, floors are protected, the frame or track is fixed, the glass is set and sealed, and the space is cleaned before handover.

Questions about smart switchable glass

Does smart glass block light when it's frosted?

No — it scatters the light, so the room stays bright while the view is blocked, much like satin glass.

What happens in a power cut?

Standard switchable glass turns opaque when there's no power, so privacy is kept.

Does smart glass stop sound?

On its own it performs like laminated glass. For acoustic privacy it can be built into a double-glazed partition.
